How should a webpage be structured?
As your user’s journey starts on your homepage, it is important to make a statement right from the get-go. This can be achieved by having a hero video, image or slider at the very top of your page. Whichever you choose to use, make sure it is good quality!
Now we move onto your written content. The first couple of paragraphs are as important as the intro mentioned above. You realistically have a couple of sentences to engage your audience, so MAKE IT COUNT! If you struggle with writing copy, get in touch! We have a brilliant copywriter at hand. You are better off admitting to your self you’re no good at it rather than spending hours writing dribble that loses you potential customers.
If you have lots of text, break it up by inserting relevant images or videos. Google loves video’s at the moment, so taking the time to record a couple of videos will help push you up Google’s ranks. Using images and video to break the text up also keeps the users eye busy and stops them getting bored.
We do however suggest you keep homepage text to a minimum (300 words). Keep the text relevant and entertaining, and work in lots of links to other pages of your website. Google’s bots also take your written structure into account, so make sure you are using headings, sub-headings and paragraphs correctly.
Page Structure – Your page structure is very important! Use headings, structure paragraphs and check your spelling and grammar.
Solve Problems – Make sure your page is answering questions and solving queries
Search Engine Optimised – Make sure your website is SEO optimised.
Blogs – Make sure your website has blogs!!! Very important!
This may sound like common sense, but trust us when we say it isn’t. Your website needs to give people information on what it is you do and why the user should choose you. You cannot assume your website is the only one they are visiting. Find a unique selling point in your business, or promote a service you offer that the user can benefit from. Give answers, solve queries and make information relevant, this makes a good website.
SME Assistant highly recommends you write blogs that solve commonly asked questions, or issues faced by your industry. Google loves websites that can help it’s users easily get answers. Here is an example;
Joe Smith the local mechanic commonly gets asked about the clicking noise coming from his car. John knows it is a common issue and writes an article that explains what the noise usually is and how to fix it. He uploads the article to his website with his contact details so people can either call or email him to get more advice. He may even want to add a video showing people how to do it themselves, should it be an easy fix. This builds trust with the user and gives them the answer they need. It would likely result in increased business for Joe too because most people won’t have the tools or know-how to do it themselves.
How Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) effects a website!
No good website is complete without quality SEO. You could have the worlds most beautiful website, but if no one can find it, it’s utterly pointless. SEO comes naturally when you have a clear message throughout your site. Know what it is you are trying to convey to people and make it obvious! If you are like the aforementioned hypothetical Brisbane based mechanic, Joe Smith, use keywords throughout your text like mechanic, car repair, break down assistance etc…

Add Some Blogs!
We use lots of exclamation marks because we want to emphasise the importance of a blog. Blogs not only help you build a following, and keep your users informed on updates in your business/industry, they massively boost your SEO. SME Assistant recommends you update your blog at least once a month. If you write one article a month, over a couple of years the database of information you have created will be priceless.
Every blog you write should be 300 words minimum, be clear and concise, but most importantly they should be well structured. Make sure you know what keywords you are aiming to target BEFORE you start writing your blog. This will make writing the article a lot easier!
The Final Touches.
If you do the above correctly, you will see a rise in rank, but there are a couple of other little tweaks you can make to your website to help out too. Making sure your metadata is correctly configured is very important. Also, make sure you compress your images and videos. This can be done using a variety of tools, we use photoshop for our images and Clipchamp for our videos. There are plenty of other tools you can use just Google image compresion and video compression tools.
We recommend you run a page speed test before and after you have done all these so you can see the difference for your self. Having fast loading pages makes a good website.
